Port Hacking is a sheltered estuary system of deep channels, weed beds and broad sand flats running up from the entrance at Cronulla. It fishes well off the beaches, the drop-offs and the flats for land-based anglers chasing mulloway, dusky flathead, bream, whiting and the occasional kingfish moving through on the tide.
In an estuary like Port Hacking, tide flow is the lever. Mulloway hold on the deeper channel edges and feed hardest on a strong run, so the big tides around new and full moon, worked after dark through the change of light, give the best odds. Fish the drop-off edges on a running tide with fresh squid or live baits, and look for bait schools getting pushed over the flats as the water moves. Flathead and bream fill in the quieter tides and daylight hours over the sand.
