Fishing Cronulla from the shore

Cronulla's beaches, the rock platforms around the point and the sand flats inside Port Hacking give land-based anglers a lot to work with across the year. The main targets off the beach and rocks are mulloway (jewfish), Australian salmon, tailor, bream, whiting, flathead and, off the washes, drummer and luderick.

When mulloway fire at Cronulla

For mulloway, moving water matters more than tide height, and darkness matters more than either. The most reliable windows are after dark on a running tide, and the classic signal is one to two days after a solid easterly swell drops away and leaves the water discoloured, with the wind backing to the west or southwest. The nights around the new moon, when it stays dark, and the few nights before a full moon, fished around moonrise, are the ones worth planning around. Fresh squid, live or fresh-dead baits, and patience through the change of light do most of the work.
